While no one knows the first time golf was played at the St. Andrews Golf Course, it is still considered the oldest golf course in the world. The only time golf was not played on this course was when golf was banned during the 45 year period that spanned from 1457 to 1502.

The Open Championships have been held at the St. Andrews Golf Course more than any other golf course in the world. 28 times to be exact. That alone should tell you a lot about this course. Remember when Tiger Woods won his first Open Championship? Well, guess what? It was at the St. Andrews Golf Course.

Another unique feature is that you can play the game of golf in two different directions. This is not something you see at your everyday golf course. Generally speaking, the course will be played counter-clockwise. The one exception is during the first week of April.

On the grounds of this amazing course, you will find the R&A clubhouse. It is a historic castle whose members are responsible for organizing the Open Championships every year. Some believe the R&A clubhouse owns the Old Course. This is not true. There is a variety of different clubs that can play on the course along with the general public.
